There are many more cars on the streets, satellite television dishes on the roofs, and literally millions more cell phones in Iraq hands than before... two-thirds [of Iraqis] say they are better off than they were under Saddam Hussein...Does America have a good plan for doing this, a strategy for victory in Iraq? Yes, we do. And it's important to make clear to the American people that the plan has not remained stubbornly still, but has changed over the years... What a colossal mistake it would be for America's bipartisan political leadership to choose this moment in history to lose its will and, in the famous phrase, to seize defeat from the jaws of the coming victory." "ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- An Islamic group in Pakistan has warned that any man in the Khyber Agency bordering Afghanistan who shaves his beard must pay a fine.
The Tanzim Bilmaroof -- which means "group for promotion of virtue" -- announced the $80 fine on a broadcast from an illegal FM radio station, the Press Trust of India said Thursday.
The group had previously imposed fines for owning a satellite television dish and for not praying five times a day. Listening to music, watching television and owning an audio cassette are also banned.
The newspaper said tribesmen who do not cover their heads have been severely beaten."
As a non-Muslim, I'd like to know if people are commanded to treat society this way and live so far from modern reality that a TV and shaving are forbidden.
